5x Perfect flowers for Woman’s day 2020

Woman’s day is celebrated on March 8th, in many countries it is tradition to gift woman flowers on this happy day.  In this article we give a few tips on what flowers to stock up on in preparation to Woman’s day. 


But of course Woman’s day  is not only about ‘simply’ gifting flowers to woman. So, what is Woman’s day actually about? - Woman’s Day is the result of the labor movement that emerged at the start of the 20th century. In 1908 it was the first time that woman working in the garment industry started striking in order to obtain better working conditions. In the following year, the first Woman’s Day was celebrated in honor of these brave woman. Officially woman’s day celebrates women’s contribution to society and raises awareness to the areas in need of improvement in order to reach gender equality. It also emphasizes on solidarity between woman.  

These are some very big and important themes, so in day-to-day life people tend to make it a little bit 'smaller' and easier applicable to their own situation. That’s why unofficially many people use Woman’s day to remember all woman that have made a significant and positive impact in their lives. This can be any woman; a teacher, best friend, colleague, wife, girlfriend, grandmother.  The symbol for this appreciation and support is traditionally to gift flowers on this day.  But what flowers should you go for in your selection? 1 x Mimosa

Mimosa is the international symbol for Woman’s day and is especially popular in Italy. During the days leading up to march 8th you will find Mimosa sellers in any corner in Italy.  On ‘La Festa della Donna’ it is tradition that Italian husbands, fathers and boyfriends gift Mimosa to all the woman in their family and all the woman in the family of his girlfriend/wife. Yes, that’s right: you better stock up on this yellow cloud if you are Italian or dating an Italian lady. The aromatic Mimosa symbolises strength, sensibility and sensitivity. Mimosa blooms in early March, indicating the arrival of spring.

2x Roses

On Woman’s day, the rose is a big deal especially in Eastern European countries. In Russia, more than a month’s worth rose sales are sold on Woman’s day alone. Now, that is a lot of roses. But in all fairness, there is hardly any occasion where it is wrong or downright inappropriate to gift roses to show your emotions or thoughts. This is mainly due to the fact that roses come in so many different shapes and colours, therefore there is always a fitting variety to gift. The rose has been around for a small 35 million years. During this long history they have been symbol for love, politics war and beauty. 3x Ranunculus

At spring time, Ranunculus is in full bloom and its availability is at full force. And oh, how we have fallen in love with the extravagant yet delicate blooms of this flower. Making this flower the perfect addition to a Woman’s day bouquet. Good to know is that, with proper care, the vase life of ranunculus can be 8 to 12 days.

4x Hydrangea

The big and voluminous floral globes of the hydrangea will instantly make you happy. This gorgeous flower is heavily loaded with symbolism. Some of the qualities this flower represents are grace, beauty and gratitude. Another meaning is abundance, due to the enormous size and the generous amount of flowers.

Besides from these beautiful symbolic meanings, this flower also has good ‘practical’ qualities. For people suffering from Hay Fever, Hydrangea is the perfect replacement for Mimosa (the international symbol for Woman’s Day). Hydrangea is typically low in pollens, whereas Mimosa can be a true nightmare for people with allergies with its high pollen concentration.

5x Protea

Protea might not be the flower that comes to your mind first when thinking about the perfect gift for woman’s day. And we think that is such a shame. Protea is named after the Greek sea god ‘Proteus’, who was, according to legend, a shapeshifter. A very fitting name for this exotic flower, since Protea comes in an overwhelming amount of different shapes (more than 1500). Most of these varieties are native to South Africa. Realizing this, it must not come to a surprise that Protea symbolizes diversity, transformation and courage. Resonating perfectly with the true meaning and heritage of Woman’s day.
