Product profile - Antirrhinum
September 5th, 2018
Here at the end of the summer the time of the antirrhinum has come! Create a lush arrangement and see the snapdragon turning into the beaming center of your bouquet. In today’s article we’d love to share more information about this special vertical flower garland.

ORIGIN

You can find this sun worshipper in the rocky areas of the Mediterranean and the Middle East (and other places in the world) Usually the term ‘snapdragon’ is used for the larger plants in the antirrhinum-family, which is the botanical name for this flower. In the wild, the antirrhinum loves a sunny place in a calcareous soil. It loves this soil so much, that you shouldn’t be surprised to see a snapdragon nestled in the cracks of an old wall or growing in a quarry.

This wondrous flower has also attracted the attention of botanists, for hundreds of years the antirrhinum has been cultivated. In the old days one could find this flower in monastery gardens especially. The stem of the antirrhinum can reach a height of about 80 centimeters tall. The flowers grow in a bunch along the end of the stem. Cultivated species can have a big variety of colours. From pure white, to yellow with tiny pink dots, or maybe peach-pink is your favorite!

MYTHOLOGY

The botanical name of the snapdragon is ‘antirrhinum’. In Ancient Greek this literally means ‘like a nose’. This name was given because of the snout-like shape of the flower. The opinions about which snout form which (mythical) animal are divided: in English the name refers to a dragon of course, but in most languages the snapdragon translates to ‘lion snout’.

Whether the flower looks like a dragon or a lion, both creatures symbolize power. The symbolical meaning of the snapdragon is ‘power’, ‘purity’ and ‘expression’. But the flower can also symbolize rejection and deceit. So beware to who you give this flower! Still, maybe it’s better to not take this negative associations too seriously, because who doesn’t instantly fall in love with this beauty? We did!
