Product profile - Gyps
March 19th, 2019

Gypsophila, gyps or baby’s breath is of course very popular in (bridal) bouquets, it has been this way since many, many years. No wonder why gyps is so popular: gyps is effortlessly beautiful  and has the ability to make an arrangement look very full without having to add many flowers or foliage. Gyps will not only look absolutely great within an arrangement, but can (of course) also be used for other purposes: make a floral crown out of gyps or use it as decoration material for example.  In today’s product profile we will tell you more about baby’s breath.

ORIGIN

Gyps has many small, yet gorgeous little flowers and belongs to the carnation genus. Traditionally one could find gyps in dried river beds. Nowadays gardeners love this plant because one of the unique features is that gyps is pest-resistant.

The name of the flower is derived from the type of soil the gysophila family loves. This is a soil rich in gypsum, which is a mineral that makes the soil too heavy and thick for most other plant types.

MYTHOLOGY

Did you know you can eat gyps? Bake the root slowly to reduce saponins (which is a certain kind of chemical found in a plant), this reduces the bitter taste of the plant. But before you pull some gyps out of the arrangement and into a frying pan: it still doesn’t taste very nice, so we cannot recommend.
