Origin
Kniphofia grows on long, leafless stalks and has a pointed top of tubular flowers that gradually open from bottom to top. These flowers often feature rich and bright colours such as orange, red and green. Due to its spikey shape and flashy colours, this flower is nicknamed ‘red hot poker’ or ‘torchilly’. The flowers of Kniphofia are overflowing with sweet nectars. That is why in the wild, kniphofia is a very popular source of food for many insects and brids, especially hummingbirds.
Kniphofia originates from (South) Africa. There are over 70 Kniphofia species known. When this flower was discovered, it was thought that it was related to the Aloe genus. This is why at first, this flower was named ‘Aloe uvaria’. But after a while, botanists realized it didn’t quite fit in the Aloe genus. From that point on, the flower was named ‘Kniphofia’ and was recognized as its own species within the family Asphodelaceae. The name ‘kniphofia’ comes from German botanist and physician Johann Hieronymus Kniphof.
Usage
Cut the stems in a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife. Clean the vase and fill this with luke warm water and add some flower food to the water. Keep the following guidelines in mind when you want to enjoy these flowers for as long as possible. Never place the flowers in direct sunlight, near a heat source, fruit or a draft.
