ORIGIN

You might recognize solidago under its popular name ‘goldenrod’, this nickname is of course due to the beautiful, sunny golden colour of the flowers. But the meaning of its botanical name is also quite beautiful and a very fitting one when you take a deeper look into the actual qualities of the plant. Solidago means ‘to make whole’. Solidago has numerous health benefits: it can help with kidney, skin and bladder problems for example. But also, and surprisingly enough, may ease the symptoms of hay fever. For many years, it was thought that solidago was bad news for hay fever patients, but this is not true! Why, you might wonder? Well - Solidago is a very fine source of nectar for bees and butterflies for example. This plant depends heavily on these little insects coming to drink the nectar, since the pollens of solidago are too heavy and sticky to be transmitted through the air. The insects therefore have the very important job of pollinating solidago. Which is good news for hay fever patients, since they have to keep an eye out for flowers that are pollinated by air, these light and airborn pollens is what clog their noses.

MYTHOLOGY

Solidago is part of the vast aster family, this family includes aster (of course), dandelion, sunflower, daisy, composite and my many more species. Most solidago species are found in America, where you can spot them in woodlands, mountains, prairies and on savannas: almost everywhere! This might be causing some problems for the plant, since they grow so abundantly in some parts that they are often viewed as a weed. It was not until that long ago, that solidago finally gained some acceptance in America, nowadays you might even occasionally spot this flower being purposely planted in gardens. In Europe they don’t share this same sentiment fortunately, it's the contrary even! Solidago is viewed as a prized garden plant in Europe.

Solidago is viewed as a symbol of good luck or good fortune, they symbolize encouragement and growth as well. The colour yellow of course stands for creativity and inspiration. Therefore these flowers are a very nice gift for a creative person or to which someone good luck and fortune.

Care

Solidago has dense clusters of little flowers, which resemble feathery plumes. Due to its height and density, solidago is often used as a filler flower.

Cut all the leaves that will be below the waterline. Preferably, cut the stems under water with a sharp knife. The water should be a combination of luke warm water and some floral food. When taken care of properly, the vase life can be between 7 to 10 days.
