Leatherleaf has been a very popular ornamental foliage for a very long time, there is no flower arrangement in the world that Leatherleaf cannot spice up. In addition, Leatherleaf is very strong and has a long vase life guarantee. Time for some more information about this unsung hero!

ORIGIN

Originally Leatherleaf has its roots in Central-America and South Africa (amongst others). In a subtropical environment, that is where Leatherleaf grows best, but they do like to stay out of the sunlight. That is why you’ll find Leatherleaf in bogs, around waterfalls or caves, where they spread around in colonies.

These days, Leatherleaf is cultivated under the protection of specially designed sheets that keep the plant in the shadow. Our Leatherleaf can originate from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Portugal or Spain. After the best plants have been harvested, they are submerged in water to pre-cool the leaves and often put in a vacuum wrapping. During transport the temperature is being kept around 3° and 4° degrees Celsius, to keep the product as fresh as possible!

MYTHOLOGY

The name ‘Leatherleaf’ is of course a reference to the though, evergreen leather-like leaves of the plant. Being though is what Leatherleaf does best, it’s a very dominant and persistent plant. Even after a fire it is one of the first plants recovering from the damage.
