You can never go wrong with the wild, cheerful colourful flowerclusters of the Aster. The Aster has grown out to be one of the most used flowers in flower arrangements. In this product profile, we tell you more about this star of the bouquet!
Origin
The aster is a flower with a literal heart of gold. The brightly coloured flower petals are placed in a star-like shape around this (often) golden heart. It is also this shape that gave the flower her name: In the Greek language ‘Aster’ means ‘star’. The aster is native to North America and Europe and belongs to the Composite family. Famous family members include Dahlia, (some) Daisies and Helianthus (sunflower). We can definitely see the family resemblance, can you?
MYTHOLOGY
The aster may be an innocent flower, but in the course of centuries the Aster has been used for a number of purposes and has held many symbolic meanings. This history goes back all the way to the time of the ancient Greeks. During this time, people believed that this ‘star-flower’ was sacred to the gods. They made wreaths out of Asters and placed them on the alters of their beloved gods.
In medieval Europe the leaves of the Aster were burned to repel snakes and the crushed roots were used to feed sick bees. A few centuries later, during the Victorian era, people were obsessed with language and the meaning of flowers. Asters were a very special gift to receive; as they would symbolize love, devotion, charm and patience.
One last example of Asters and their symbolism; At the time of the Hungarian revolution (after WO1), the Aster became a political symbol, as well as symbol of change. The supporters of the social democratic Hungarian National Council wore an Aster on their hats, to show their support for the cause. This Hungarian revolution is also nicknamed the ‘Aster Revolution’.
Since those busy ancient Greek, medieval European, Victorian era and Hungarian revolution days, Aster has calmed down a bit and sits nice and pretty in our bouquets. But you’ll never know what storm Aster is cooking up next…
