The lush flower clusters are what Delphinium is known for. In an arrangement, it is therefore impossible to overlook its beauty. The Delphinium, also known as 'Larkspur', is the focus of this Product Profile. We give more information about the background of the Delphinium, the different species, the availability and the colours and varieties that are available in our range.
Origin
Delphinium is not particularly picky about its habitat as it naturally occurs in many places in the northern hemisphere. In total there are about 250 species to be distinguished. Delphinium is a member of the larger family of Ranunculaceae, which also includes flowers such as Anemones and Wolfsbane.
Mythology
The name 'Delphinium' is derived from the Greek word for 'dolphin'. With a little imagination, the flower buds do indeed resemble a dolphin. Another name for delphinium is ‘larkspur’, most delphinium species have about 5 petal-like sepals (the small leaves in between the petals), together they form a hollow pocket with a spur at the end, giving the plant its name.
Delphinium is a true magnet for insects such as bumble bees and butterflies that enjoy the nectar. For humans this flower is poisonous. However, in ancient and medieval times people did not take this very seriously and used the flower as a laxative and to stop post-natal bleeding. The crushed seeds were also used to treat lice and the petals were used to treat snake or scorpion bites.
Colours & varieties
Delphiniums are available in various lengths, ranging from 50 centimeters to a staggering 130 centimeters. The shorter lengths look great in bouquets, while the really big ones are ideal for grand arrangements for weddings and other events. Within the Delphinium genus, there are several varieties, which are mainly based on the height that the flower can reach and the size of the flower. We have the following Delphinium varieties in our assortment:
Delphinium Belladonna
These flowers are slightly shorter in comparison to other varieties. The Delphinium Belladonna 'Volkerfrieden' for example, has an amazing purple blue colour with a white heart.
Delphinium Elatum
These flowers become really big boys. The 'Delphinium Elatum' varieties of our partner Quality4Flowers are around 90 to 130 centimeters tall, have firm branches and are available in various, amazing colours.
Consolida
also named 'forking Larkspur', differs in appearance and structure from the other Delphinium species. The flowers of the Consolida are somewhat smaller compared to the varieties described above.
Care
Cut off a small piece of the stem with a sharp knife and put the flowers in water with some flower food. Remove all leaves that touch the water. If the water becomes dirty, cut off a small piece of the stem, refresh the water and add flower food.
Do not place the flowers in a draught or near a heat source. Place the delphiniums in the shade and away from fruit; the gases emitted by ripening fruit reduce the longevity of the flowers.
