Product profile - Leucadendron
April 13th, 2021

In terms of shape, Leucadendron is an unusual and unconventional flower, but certainly not less beautiful! This native South African beauty is related to other special species such as the Protea and Leucospermum and belongs to the unique 'Fynbos vegetation' (more about this later). But there is so much more to tell about Leucadendron!

Origin

Leucadendron means 'white tree' in Greek. A little strange, perhaps, since you may only know red, green or pink-coloured Leucadendron varieties. However, the name of the genus is derived from the silver 'Leucadendron argenteum' tree, which grows on the mountain slopes of South Africa. The entire Leucadendron genus contains about 80 species, all of which are trees or shrubs. We mentioned earlier that Leucadendron is part of the Fynbos vegetation. Fynbos' is a species-rich vegetation and only grows in the South African Cape region. A relatively small area, but the breeding ground for about 7000 fern- and flower species. By comparison: in the entire UK (which is much larger in terms of land area) around 4800 plants and flower grow. The South African Cape region is therefore truly a special piece of land!

Colours & types

As a cut flower, Leucadendron will certainly stand out in your bouquet! Besides its striking appearance, Leucadendron is also known for its intense colours; this flower is available in (deep) red, green, pink and yellow shades.  The vase life of Leuadendron is also something to be cheerful about; under the right conditions it can last up to 20 days!

In our assortment you will find both branched and single flowered varieties. Some examples are the Leucadendron Rosette, a green variety with a large red heart, the dark red Leucadendron 'blush spray' and the Leucadendron Jester whose leaves are coloured red and green.
