ORIGIN

The Cotton plant also known as the Gossypium, grows very well in the tropics or subtropics. The word ‘gossypium’ hails from the Arabic word ‘goz’, meaning ‘soft substance’. There are several Gossypium species that can adapt extremely well to difficult circumstances. Most (cultivated) gossypium are shrubs and last for about a year. The cotton plant can grow up to 300 cm.

MYTHOLOGY

Most cotton plants are of course used to make the cotton fabric. This started in Pakistan, about 7000 years ago. It wasn’t until around the year 900 the cultivation and processing of the cotton plant spread around the world. Since then it grew out to the biggest non-food crop in the world and a very valuable trading product. In the past the cotton trade was the driving force behind the industrial revolution and brought great fortune to the British Empire.

The cotton trade also had its dark side. Back in the day, cotton was worth and especially in the South of America men, woman and children were forced to work on the cotton fields.  In the end, cotton was also a big reason for the outbreak of the American Civil War.
