But there is so much more to tell about Hypericum: did you know that Hypericum is actually an herb? In this Product profile we dive deeper into the background of the timeless Hypericum.

Origin

Hyperium is an herb and is perhaps better known as 'St John's Wort'. The nickname is derived from Saint John's Day which is celebrated on the 24th of July. This nickname is no coincidence, as it is around this date that the flowering of Hypericum in Europe reaches its peak. Hypericum originates from Europe, but has since spread throughout the world.

During the flowering period, you can recognise Hypericum by the yellow flowers that grow on the shrub. It is only after this that its famous, shiny berries appear. When the flowering period is over and the flowers wilt, the berries appear on the branches.

Over the centuries, Hypericum has played an important role in many European cultures. In ancient Germanic cultures for example, the red oil of the Hypericum plant was said to be the blood of Baldur, the Germanic god of nature, summer and light. In later times, various European cultures attributed magical powers to the herb. It was tied to roofs as protection against thunderstorms, but it was also thought to protect against other 'dangers' such as witchcraft and magic. It was also said that the herb would make a woman pregnant should she pick the St John's Wort naked on Midsummer Night. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm this, but what we do know for sure is that Hypericum has a healing effect on (burn) wounds and can serve as a herbal antidepressant.
