Product profile - Rose hips
September 29th, 2020
The rose is easily one of the most recognized and famous flower in the world. But after their beauty has withered away, you shouldn’t count rosebush out just yet: it has one more surprise. From the old rose, a rose hip starts growing. Rose hips are the fleshy fruit of the rose and for centuries the rose hips have been recognised for their healing abilities. In the last few years however, the rose hip has been developed into a beautiful addition to just about any (autumn) bouquet!

ORIGIN

Since centuries roses are admired for their beauty and scent. These days you can find the rose just about everywhere in the world. And from almost every rosebush a rose hip can grow. In order for a rose hip to develop, the blosomming rose has to be pollinated. Eventually the rose hip starts to grow. They do like to take their time to grow however, so be patient!

MYTHOLOGY

We prefer to see Rosehips arranged in a vase or used in a bouquet, but the Rosehip can do so much more! For example, during the times of the great discovery journeys, dried rose hips were often brought onboard of a ship. People who contacted scurvy on the long sea journey, were treated with Rosehips since they have the ability to relieve stomach cramps. Also those who suffered from a could or a cough were given Rosehips as they are full of vitamin A,B, C and potassium, which all add to a better immune system.

Rose hips are also used in the kitchen, marmalade, syrup, and tea can be made from the berries. Sidenote: don't eat raw rose hips, as they are very sour and not every type of rose hip is suitable for consumption. Animals do love the raw Rosehips however, during the wintertime it is an important source of food for birds for example!
