Zantedeschia, also known as ‘Calla’, is the perfect example of elegance and style. This chalice-shaped flower gives a bouquet or arrangement an instant classic look. In this product profile we dive deeper into the background story of Zantedeschia: time to learn more about this stylish flower!
Origin
A nickname of Zantedeschia is (besides ‘Calla’) 'Arum Lilly'. The plant is native to Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland. Throughout the years this flower became naturalized in countries such as Kenya, Madeira, Zambia and Australia. In Australia however, the people are not quite fond of thie naturalization of the Zantedeschia. They even classified this plant as a toxic weed and pest and people are trying to exterminate the plants’ presence on this continent. This is far from the case on the small island of Saint Helena, where the flower is growing widely. They even love Zantedeschia so much that it became the national flower of the island.
Zantedeschia is known for its strength. Although it prefers to grow alongside or in a stream or pond, it can survive a dry season without withering away. This strength is part of the reason why Zantedeschia is such a popular cut flower.
Altough Zantedeschia is a sight to behold, it is not a good idea to take a bite out of the plant (in case you’ve been wanting to). Zantedeschia is extremely toxic, ingestion of the plant can cause a severe burning sensation to the mouth and throat, swellings and an intense stomach pain. Don’t worry, of course it is safe to touch Zantedeschia: just don’t bite down!
Mythology
The most noticeable feature of the Zantedeschia is its beautiful Chalice, which is in fact a huge flower petal. Very slowly and majestically the petal opens up, revealing its heart. The actual flowers of the Zantedeschia are tiny and located in the center of the ‘chalice’.
Zantedeschia is often seen as a ‘lucky flower’ and is associated with partying and having fun. This symbolism originates from the ancient Greeks and Romans. The shape of the flower reminded them of a chalice which was used for toasting. Zantedeschia is also often associated with faith, holiness, purity, rebirth and beauty. Throughout the years Zantedeschia has graced many wedding bouquets for these reasons.
