Product profile - Phoenix Roebelenii
October 3th, 2018
When we think of palms, we generally think about a vacation paradise, where we are falling asleep under a palm tree right beside the ocean… But even if you don’t live in the (sub) tropical areas of this world, you can enjoy the Phoenix roebelenii at home – in a bouquet! This product profile gives some extra background information about the Phoenix roebelenii palm.

ORIGIN

Phoenix roebelenii, is also known as pygmy date palm, or miniature date palm. Like the name suggests, this miniature palm is the baby brother of the palm family. The phoenix roebelenii can only reach a height of 3 meters. But it’s the size that makes this palm so popular. Originally this variety is native to southeastern Asia. But nowadays you can find this palm growing indoors, in many (living) rooms around the world.

In their natural habitat, dates will start to grow on the plant, these dates are unfortunately not edible.

MYTHOLOGY

During the time of the ancient Greek, palm was symbol for victory. Nike, Greek goddess of victory, was often pictured offering a palm or a laurel wreath to the victor. Much later this symbol was adopted by Christianity, where the palm symbolised Jesus’ victory on death. This is also the reason the palm is often used in flower arrangements on All Saints Day. On this day people take flowers and plants to the graves of deceased loved ones.
