Blooming with Flora United in South Africa

Flora United SA got its start in March 2007, when Willem Verhoogt, Niek Oudendijk, and Bertu Nieuwoudt decided to buy the Klein-Alexandershoek farm in South Africa. What began as a small dream has now grown into a successful business, growing 36 hectares of flowers (roughly 51 football fields).

At first, the trio focused mainly on Leucospermum and Leucadendron, two flowers that grow really well in South Africa. But today, Flora United has expanded its range to include Geraldton Wax (Chamelaucium) and the elegant Serruria, also known as the "Blushing Bride." What makes the company stand out is its specialty in early-blooming Serruria and Geraldton Wax, which have an impressively long flowering season.

It’s all about the soil

The choice for the Clanwilliam area wasn’t by chance. The Mediterranean climate with mild winters is perfect for growing flowers. Add to that the fertile, deep sandy soil, which is just right for many of the varieties Flora United grows, and it’s easy to see why the farm is doing so well.

Flora United has a deep love for nature, but they’re also committed to doing things the right way. The company holds various social and sustainability certifications, including Global G.A.P. and SIZA Social, and is aiming to achieve SIZA Environmental soon. Technology also plays a big role. To optimize cultivation, they use advanced irrigation systems that ensure the flowers get exactly the water they need.

“We’re always looking for smarter ways to work,” says Bertu, co-owner of Flora United SA. “We deal with different types of soil, and that means making smart choices. Some flowers do better on sandy soil, others on heavier soil. Plus, each season has its own challenges, so we’ve got to adapt fast.”

Season after season

At the heart of Flora United is a clear mission: delivering top-quality flowers, season after season. “For us, it’s all about communication and reliability,” says Bertu. “We’ve built strong relationships with our partners, like Coloriginz, and that collaboration is key. It helps us align better and improve what we do through honest, valuable feedback.”

And the future? It’s looking bright. “I’m proud of how far we’ve come over the years,” Bertu adds. “We now have 68 people working at Flora United. My goal is to keep growing new varieties on the farm. But more than anything, to keep delivering flowers of outstanding quality, season after season.”
