Product Profile - Aspidistra
February 4th, 2019

De aspidistra is an extremely strong plant, that can survive a punch or two. Lack of light, irregular watering, or extreme heath? Where other plants would have withered away long ago, it forms no threat for the aspidistra. For hundreds of years this plant is loved in and around the house. But also in a flower arrangement the aspidistra proved its power house qualities, and helps to compliment the beauty in every flower.

ORIGIN

The aspidistra is native to east and Southeast Asia. They don’t need a lot of sunlight to survive, and usually grow huddled closely together under trees and foliage. Temperatures between 10 and 29 degrees Celsius are handled without any major problems.

MYTHOLOGY

In the Netherlands this plant is also known as the ‘Butcher plant’. At some point in time, this plant was probably very common in butcher shops throughout the country. Even there, without a lot of (natural) light and under low temperatures, it was able to survive. In England the aspidistra is commonly known as the ‘cast iron plant’, of course named after its iron-like survivability skills. Did you know that ever since the Victorian times this plant has been popular as a houseplant, because of its ability to keep standing tall against smoke and dust from oil lamps and fireplaces?

COLOURS

When it is time for harvesting every aspidistra is carefully reviewed and selected. With small scissors the aspidistra is cut at several lengths. In the warehouse every stalk is reviewed and measured again before transport. Besides from the usual aspidistra (Aspidistra eliator) we offer the Aspidistra variagata, in this variety the dark green leaf has several white stripes mixed in. This natural mutation, is created when the plant multiplies and is quite rare. As the plant grows and multiplies, the green leaf quickly returns.
